EDF Smart Meters Pros/Cons

Had an e mail today & my current supplier EDF wants to fit a Smart Meter.
We already have a basic "Smart Meter" fitted by British Gas (electric supply) many years ago & we look at this daily.
So questions, please:-
1 What are the advantages/disadvantages to me on having a EDF meter fitted?
2 What are the problems, if any if I change supplier, as I'm sure to do in the future?

Lots and lots of similar threads on this forum.

A meter (whether it be pink, blue with spots)  whoever provides it is a meter - its purpose is to record the energy consumed.

By "We already have a basic "Smart Meter"" do you mean the IHD in your kitchen or the one in an outside meter box or your garage ?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it......
  • Robin,
    What does IHD mean?
Yes the basic meter is in the Kitchen which recards usage but does not connect to the supplier.
Is it best just to stay as we are?

  • So stay with what we have?
No advantage of having a new updated version that "talks" to the supplier?

The only advantage is that the meters will supply the readings to the supplier instead of you have to manually input your meter readings.

We were with EDF in our previous house and had them fit smart meters. The gas meter never did work in smart mode and we always had to manually input the gas meter readings although the electric meter worked in smart mode just fine.
  • OK, we will stay as we are, don't mind reading the meter!

Before long, you may find that the only way you can get the best tariff is to agree to getting a new smart meter.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

But you could equally say you may not have to get a new meter to get best deal!
