Paint wooden kitchen units .. has anyone?

I have a decent but old fashioned wooden kitchen. Would love to change it but cannot possibly afford to .. or to even just change the doors as this always sounds pretty expensive.

I read articles in home magazines where people say they have painted their units. If any of you have, could you tell me what was involved, what you used and how successful it was?

I don't mind putting a lot of work in, I just don't want to ruin my kitchen.

The units are mid oak and were spruced up last year using Sikkens (type of stain/preserver. The edges of the carcases are dark brown but the carcasses are cream. I would like to paint the units a nice light cream.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

I would recommend "cupboard paint", which is specifically for kitchen units and doors. I did mine in the summer and they look a treat, although they did take about 3 coats as I had dark wood and changed them to yellow.
You can get this from B&Q. Good luck:beer:
  • Hi there,

We did just this last year. We had nasty melamine yellow  units, and have painted them a very light cream (almost white).

That cupboard paint is an absolute rip off! Use a good primer, and then try an eggshell topcoat. it stuck really well to ours and shows no sign of wear after 18 months. It's not high gloss, but has a lovely slight sheen to it. It wipes clean with a damp cloth.

I took all the doors and handles off, which gave a much better finish. Use a foam roller, and you honestly won't be able to tell that they have been painted! We are delighted with how they turned out. If you'd like pictures, let me know and I'll try and post some.

    Good luck!

    I've been Money Tipped!
I had white wooden doors. I used Farrow and Ball eggshell paid in farrow cream. I did this 3 years ago, 2 coats with just a light sanding down first. It is really easy paint to work with.

Still looks as good as the day I did it! My mum used a nice green on hers that looks like the colours you see in the magazines.

Homebase stock Farrow and Ball now, but make sure you get the eggshell.

Huge choice of colours as well. Don't bother with the cupboard paints, you get little choice.

Thanks for the advice. I feel quite inspired now ... which is usually dangerous for me ;)

Divorcingjack - I would love to see photos if you could post them.

    Bootman - I am a bit F & B fan ...not cheap but such lovely shades and a great finish. I would be using F & B

Onejontwo - I hear what you say about cupboard paint but think the colours may be limited. I am a F & B girl through and through.

    I am on a mission now :D
