Apprentice made redundant with no notice

My son has received notice at 8pm today that he will be made redundant from tomorrow. He was not consulted and had no idea this was likely to happen. He has been on furlough since lockdown as his office was closed but no mention was made to him that he would be made redundant, he was fully expecting to return to work and continue at university. His employers are not willing to continue his furlough via government funding either!
Can anyone advise if all this is legal, I feel he should at least have been told it was a possibility and have been given a week notice as per his employment contract. Thanks

How long has he worked there for?0

He definitely should have been given the appropriate notice as per his contract at the least. Perhaps worth giving ACAS a call?0

If the contract says a weeks notice, then that's all he's entitled to unfortunately.
I would suggest you do everything in your power to get that weeks money that your son is entitled to. Keep a record of everything.
If they want to play dirty, then the local press would be very interested in a story such as this.

Nothing suggests that your son won't receive the week's notice pay he is entitled to.
Unfortunately this is going to a reoccurring theme as the coming weeks pass. Many people are going to lose their jobs. As companies batten down the hatches in an attempt to survive. Challenging times lie ahead.0 -
The government guidelines state that employers have to give apprentices a contract stating how long they will be employed https://!!!!!!/2XtoV3N
and it doesn't seem like your son's employer has complied with the terms of that contract.
I agree with Mrsn that Acas may be able to help : 0300 123 1100.
