Please can you help with this issue We booked flights with ryanair to lanzarote and due to government advice try to change them through Ryan air who are telling everyone they will waiver the change over fee

Unfortunately this is not the case after trying to get through their chat system for over 2 hours we were told that because it was less than a week to go we would incur heavy charges of over £400

We should be going on 4th August and tried to reschedule today

Please could you help as they aren't staying true to what they are saying. My daughter has 2 children and can't afford the extra charges but if we don't take the flight we loose all our money regardless of government advice

Many thanks
Carol

Heavy charges, or merely the difference in fare?

"Move your flight for free to any date before 31 Dec 2020, just pay the fare difference.
This is only applicable to new bookings made after 10 June for travel in July and August"

when did she originally book the flights, when was she moving them to?
Does she have travel insurance that includes FCO advice not to travel?

Sadly their T&C’s state they have to be rebooked at least 7 days before travel to get the ‘free’ movement of dates. Great if like my daughter you were due to fly early tomorrow morning to Spain !

The third time I’ve seen this today - when will people learn to buy insurance when booking?

It’s not just for the trip, it’s for if anything goes wrong beforehand too - I just can’t fathom why people leave it so late.
Please please please to anyone reading this, buy insurance the moment you book! :)

Speaking for myself, this whole episode has been a strong learning curve for me.  Not only to buy insurance on booking but also to select it carefully.   I honestly had never realised taking out a single trip policy covered you from the time it was taken out and not for the 14 or whatever days of travel!    Also been guilty of finding the cheapest and thinking "that will do nicely"   Of COURSE a ridiculously low premium is not going to include a lot of scenarios - makes sense but didn't actually cross my mind.  I was only looking to see if it covered me for being hospitalised at the resort or lost luggage.

Indeed. I use the test for insurance.....if, before the holiday, I was ill/injured and was unable to travel, what would my losses be?
I have had holidays booked in the past where I have not taken insurance immediately as flights and hotels were fully refundable so by my test I would have no loss that I needed to insure prior to the trip. As soon as you would have a potential loss you either need to insure against it or accept you are self-insuring and accepting any loss yourself.

    I have NW FP for a couple of years but before that i never took out insurance until a month or two before the trip - same time as airport parking etc;;
I never really thought about it either! I always book flexible accommodation, but normally non refundable flights (why would i pay for a flexible economy ticket when the same price covers a non flex business class :)) just been lucky i guess - touch wood.
I think a lot of people are probably in the same boat or didnt realise.
