Too many Bananas and Apples

Hi
in a moment of madness I bought a scoop of bananas and a scoop of apples (eating) off the market. I already had a few left at home and its become apparent that there's no way either me or the kids are going to eat them all.
Is there anything I can do with them?
I have made a banana cake loaf thing before and the kids didnt like it!
Can you freeze bananas? If so, what do you use them for?
Can I substiute cooking apples for eating apples in a crumble? would it still taste ok? do I need to treat them differently?
sorry for the questions but im really short this month and I don't want to see them wasted!

Other than using bananas for baking I don't know what you could do other than give them away. I tried freezing them but didn't like the slimy texture when they defrosted. When I make apple crumble I always use eating apples and a bit less sugar so you could make crumbles and pies etc and they'll taste lovely.0

My lot aren't overkeen on banana cakes or muffins...probably the only cake they don't like :rotfl:
I've heard that you can freeze bananas if you're going to bake with them, but that's probably not much help here. I suppose if you make a lot of smoothies, you could use frozen bananas, but I haven't tried this yet.
I always use up any apples that are over by cooking with them - you need less sugar (as mentioned), but that's the only difference.

Bananas are quite good frozen and eaten as healthy 'lollipops', especially if you top them with chocolate.0

My OH freezes apples and bananas chopped up and then blends them for smoothies...then he doesnt have to add ice. If you add a little oatmeal, its more of a breakfast drink.

I made a lovely banana loaf the other day with loads of walnuts - deliberately didn't tell OH exactly what it was and he wolfed it down.
He's usually a bit fussy with this kind of thing - on another occasion I told him I was making banana cake ("yuk! can you really make a cake out of bananas!") and he saw the mixture (which does look pretty disgusting) and refused to eat it.
Another idea - leave banana in skin, make a slit lengthways, stuff with chocolate, press shut, wrap in foil and bake for a bit (nice on barbecue but obviously not right now, oven will do!)
Then just open the foil and eat straight from the skin. Each person could have one as a dessert, which might get rid of a few.

I second the lollipop thing or if you are feeling adventurous, peel and slice them, then freeze. If you take them out for 5 or so minutes then blend in a food processor they make delicious fat free 'ice cream', I've done this when I have been eating raw.
Apples will be fine cooked in a pie or crumble, you'll find you don't need to add much (if any) sugar. If unsure you could start to cook them down in a little butter and taste them before you add a pie crust or crumble topping.IAAR/IAAMM/MFTMFAQ/IOA6BH0 -
peel the bananas before you freeze them.....0

No don't peel the bananas before you freeze them! The skins keep them from getting freezer burnt.
I had a lot of apples once and made applesauce with it. We mix it into porridge in the mornings along with a banana and some sultanas!
Mashed banana can also be used as a margarine (fat) substitute in baking along with applesauce. I'm thinking muffins etc where you don't notice the difference in texture or taste. HTH.0 -
You could make fried bananas and sweetcorn fritters to go with Chicken Maryland
How about Bananas in Custard for a pudding
Or Banana Milkshakes thickened with a scoop of vanilla ice cream
Finally and a real memory of my childhood how about Banana Butties

Try this banana pudding which is good( Mary Berry)
6 ripe bananas
2 oz marg
4 oz light muscovado sugar
3 oz SR flour
1 oz wholemeal..... or just use 4 oz SR wholemeal
1 beaten egg
Good pinch mixed spice
Heat oven 350 deg F, 180C Gas 4. Lightly grease a 2 pint ovenproof dish. Mash bananas to a pulp with a fork. Melt marg , stir into bananas add other ingredients.Blend thoroughly. Turn into dish and cook for about 45 mins until golden brown and the pudding has shrunk slightly from the sides of the dish.

Do a search on a cookery website. I have another recipe for Sticky banana puddings with Tipsy Toffee and Walnut sauce.
Enjoy!0
