Can anyone help, please. My dad passed away in April and his car has passed to his sons. The car was SORN and uninsured with no MOT. It now has an MOT (the garage
collected and returned it). My brother is now the registered keeper. We want it back on the road. The problem is that we can't get insurance without tax and can't get
tax without insurance. Anyone else has this problem and solved it? Many thanks. Paul.

There is no reason it being sorned will stop you insuring it. Arrange insurance and then tax it the next day.1

You can tax it without insurance.Having a taxed car without insurance is an offence however, which is picked up by computer. There is no reason for an insurer to refuse to insure it if you tell them you intend to drive it! (It isn't possible to buy a taxed car anyway, as the tax cancels when the keeper changes)I have seen some posts recently about insurers requiring the policy to be cancelled when a vehicle is declared SORN, but I can't imagine why, as there is a lot less chance of crashing if a car is SORN'd and in the garage, and most 'bikes get SORN'd when there is salt on the roads.....I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

I don't recall the insurance company even asking whether it was taxed or SORN'd.As above, I can't see why they would even care and being SORN'd and therefore not being driven on public roads can surely only reduce their risk anyway. Plus, a SORN'd vehical could still be stolen so most people would want cover for that wouldn't they?

EVERY used car is bought, insured... then taxed.
Is this the old "But untaxed invalidates insurance" guff?
Oh, and also... insurance hasn't been checked when you buy tax since 2013... So if you really worry about that, you can do it the other way round. Just insure it fairly quickly, because it's illegal to have a taxed but uninsured car... DVLA will take a little while to get round to checking, though.1 -
That makes sense. I didn't used to be able to tax my car online because my insurance renewal date was to close to the tax date and the insurance database was only updated every two weeks or so. I had to go the PO. But, no problem taxing online these days.
