Hello
I am doing decoration in my Victorian semi and can see walls are in terrible state. I did quite a bit of sanding by hand today and I am dying.
I am after recommendation of sander type and size that would be suitable for this DIY project.

Depends how much you want to pay. An orbital sander would be my choice for walls depending on how bad they are. If you need a belt sander they would be really rough.0

If its just to rough up a previously painted wall an orbital sander will do the job.0

Thanks for the feedback. I will get one tomorrow. What disc grit I should use? Today I was using 120 when sanding by hand not sure if for the sander I should get higher/lower or the same?0

Depends on how much needs to be sanded off. Using a coarse paper to start with can save a lot of time. Working down through the grades gives a smoother finish.0

I would strongly recommend a dust extraction system. The cheapest titan wet/dry vacuum (from screwfix) is a cheap and cheerful start - It wont stop you having to clean up dust after but it will greatly reduce the dust and stop the room turning into a sandstorm. As for orbital sanders I would not buy another screwfix own brand: I've had 2 (1st was replaced under warranty) they don't have a good action and toss the disks long before the sanding side is worn. When the current one gives up/I really need a decent one I will try the Makita M series (the red ones) I have a red Makita belt sander which is simple and excellent. Apparently the series is based on the old Makita designs so whilst they lack fancy features they should be great for the prices - my dad has a Makita disk cutter that is over 40 years old and still going strong, if my belt sander manages such a lifespan I will be very happy indeed.

I use a Bosch orbital connected to a Karcher WD2 wet and dry. Works well and really cuts down on the dust. Of all my tools I use these in conjunction the most.
I normally use aluminium oxide (green) paper grit 80 on the walls and switch to 120 to sand down the filler.0
