Irish ferries - cheapest option?

I want to take a ferry for a car and two people from Scotland to Northern Ireland, and then drive south, before returning in a few days, to either to Holyhead or Fishguard.  I want to do this trip within the next couple of weeks, although I can be flexible on dates.

I have to say, I am a little shocked at the ferry prices.  Does anyone know the cheapest / most economical way to do this?  Are there any offers / vouchers out there?  I guess I can't even get a cheaper return ticket as I want to take 2 different ferry routes?

Are you aware of the Irish Republic's requirement of 14 day quarantine for those arriving from Scotland or England? Your car registration will give the game away, as will the return ferry to Wales.

Indeed the prices are shocking. They have been for years. The Cairnryan routes have traditionally been cheaper, to the extent that the difference offsets the extra fuel costs for anyone starting/ending their journey north of ~ Birmingham (time allowing).

It's not exactly a quarantine, it's more a restriction of movements once you get there with no financial penalties if you don't comply.

I've got a trip to Morocco booked for September which is highly unlikely to take place.  Looked at trips to Scotland or Northern Ireland for this period instead.  Thought it would be good to drive to Scotland visiting friends in Lincoln and Leeds on the way and taking the ferry to Northern Ireland.  The prices are/seem incredibly high (they might be reasonable if the cost of running the service is high) and that is prompting a rethink.
