New to cardiff - local food shopping?

Hi there,
we are new to Cardiff and money is tight. We have just managed to buy our first property and my partner has started a full-time MSc course at Cardiff Uni.

I want to buy fresh food like fruit, veg and meat from local shops as I have been told that's cheaper than supermarkets.

Can anyone recommend a market or a decent butcher?

Thanks a million.

there are a lot of fruit/veg, butchers and fishmongers stalls in cardiff indoor market. from my limited firsthand experience of these, they have been very good.

if you can get to splott/bessemer open air markets of a sunday, you will often find the stalls selling a bgs of x/y/z fruit and veg for a pound. look for the ones that aren't battered or bruised, and you can alsways freeze the excess to use as required.

if you can get to penarth there is a fab butchers in glebe street under the name of lush. fab stuff!

if you can let us know what part of cardiff you will be in, im sure someone can give you recemmendations more local to you.

any other cardiff info/advice you're after, feel free to ask - there's a few cardiffians knocking around who will be happy to help you settle in and find your way around

Thank you very much for your tips already.

I live near Sloper Road/Virgil Street and I noticed there is a wholesale fruit market 200m away, but they are not open on weekends.

    I will try your suggestions!!!!:T

Cardiff farmers market every Sunday in Riverside, Fitzhamon Embankment, came in the top 3 farmers markets in Britain in a recent awards which was on Radio 4.

However I don't think you'll find it very cheap, but you should give it a go. Near to you are the ethnic shops on Tudor street and Ninian Park Road.

Try Prings butchers on Crwys Road. I'm not a regular there but I've been a few times and there always seems to be a queue out of the door on Saturday. The stuff I've bought there was half tidy and if he was no good the shop would be empty.

There is a farmers' market held in Penarth (just outside Cardiff) once a month - not sur eof the dates but it is always packed and the food seems to be really good too.

I hope it is open next Sunday 23 Dec 2007. Anybody know? BTW it is definitely NOT cheap, but the quality is the best I have found outside of London (Borough Market).
In case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:
