Car insurance - change in name spelling = big difference in premium - can I do anything?

Would they use the information on the DL for the policy, as in the example above the name would change to the DL name by default?

What date was the quote for Nicki given, and what date was the quote for Nicola given? 
If there's a day or more difference, the price will rise - insurance is more expensive the closer you get to the policy start date.

Yes, it is optional... But why wouldn't you? I mean, it's not like you're lying about your points etc, so all that'll happen is that they confirm what you told 'em.

I wouldn't expect them to check for precise "Nicola/Nicky" name match at quote - I wouldn't expect that to be relevant. But it would certainly remove any shadow of confusion come a claim, which is the only time it really matters.
