What to do? Significant repair costs found on structural survey

    Did your surveyor use the traffic light system?  My house had 17 out of 23 'red' lights.

    You may find that some of those items would be irrelevant. For example, if you had an extension built, or moved internal walls etc. New kitchens and bathrooms would likely pick up a few more too.
    I once read that you should allow 1%pa of the property value for maintenance. Guess that is more of an average, but not a bad plan to budget for.

    It really depends on what kind of things the surveyor has picked up on. If they are cencerning things like damp, unsafe electrics, plumbing that's about to burst etc then it's important to sort these things out quickly. However if it's things like the kitchen units are old, the windows are old etc. Then you probably knew that anyway and these are things you can live with and get to in future years. I remember my surveyor commenting on the windows in our house were old and we lived with them find for about 12 years before we got around to replacing them.
