Hi
im currently furloughed still but 25th June I ended up in hospital for 5 days due to a back injury. A month on I’m still not driving and still on pain meds.
I did phone drs for sick note but was told as furloughed I wouldn't need a sick note It’s, is this correct?
Also my sister in law seems to think although I’m furloughed I’d still be entitled to extra money due to being unwell or immobile.
is this correct?
thank you in advance

Employers can choose to furlough you while you are off sick. Otherwise it would be SSP unless your contract of employment says otherwise. I would guess SSP will be less than furlough, so it might suit you and your employer to leave things as they are. You certainly cannot claim SSP and get paid furlough pay.0

The other thing to consider is that by being furloughed you can be asked to go back to work at short notice. I'm not sure how an an employer would take to an employee then self certifying for 7 days as soon as they've been asked to go back so it may, depending on your relationship with your employer, keeping them aware of the situation.

I suggest you stop listening to your sister in law. Statutory Sick Pay is around £95 a week so you’re pretty much bound to be better off on furlough. You can’t have both, for the fairly obvious reason.
It might be financially better to let sleeping dogs lie, however the only potential problem is what would you say to your employer if they rang you this afternoon and said “great news, we’re starting back, the furlough schemes worked, the government has managed to keep you in a job. see you bright and early on Monday morning”

Thank you for your replies. That’s what I thought. But she’s was being adamant. 🙄Things will get better day by day.0

If anything just try and see the glass as half full already, might not feel it but in a way your timings been spectacularly “lucky”. if you’d have picked any other period of your life To end up in hospital and laid up for a month then you’d have been trying to make ends meet on £95 a week, for your back to give in during the relatively short period whilst the furlough Scheme is available and your employer has chosen to use it.p has left you much better off.wannaberich41 said:Thank you for your replies. As Jeremy says 'unless your employment contract says otherwise'. So check that first.
i.e. If you are paid your full wages when sick then it is my understanding an employer can pay you that sick pay, rather than the capped 80% furlough pay and then re-furlough you when you are back from sickness.
If you aren't paid full wages or are paid SSP or have run out of paid full sick pay then it's more likely you'd be far better off staying on furlough pay.
The dilemma here is you need to be sure that you are entitled to full sick pay AND your employer will pay it, if not they are duty-bound to move you to sick pay so it's a gamble!0 -
An employee can be furloughed while sick and an employer can choose to top up the furlough pay to 100%discat11 said:... Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.0
