Refunds from holiday

in Credit cards
We have received our refund from our holiday to our Sainsbury’s credit card. However Sainsbury’s refuse to transfer the full refund to our bank account saying they are entitled to deduct our current balance even though we have not been billed for that yet. On top of this we were given the amount they would be transferring but 2 days later when this was done it was another £500 less as further transactions had come through. Can they force us to pay our credit purchases early like this?
