Unsure if we should pay

Hello looking for advise ...we signed a contract in 2019 with a company that works to reduce your business rates if they win they take 30% commission on the discount you are awarded. We were able to get a discount awarded that lasts 2 years we paid the 30% commission on the discount off our retail rates. Fast forward to this year there has been no retail rates to pay due to COVID-19 the company initially invoiced us for 30% of our whole retail rates....which seamed a bit cheeky as they had not done anything to get this discount for us, they then invoiced 30% of the discount we would have received If the was a bill to pay. My question is do we have to pay this even though there is no retail rates to pay this year? I have assured the company that I will of course pay the 30% commission due when we are paying our rates again they are sending reminders adding 2% interest every month (as per their contract) many advise most welcome tia

You are not alone, and unfortunately these contracts are usually worded in a very watertight way, so you will unfortunately have to pay.0
