Service Description - misleading?

I've just called my local Hyundai dealer for a quote on a service.  I'd already done some homework and saw Hyundai offered an esssentials service which met my needs, especially as it included a "full health check of vehicle management systems using Hyundai diagnostic tester" which I needed due to a dashboard warning light.  The dealer initially said that this wasn't included, so I queried it in writing including a screenshot of another Hyundai dealers offering for the product.  The original dealer has now come back and said that they do use the diagnostic tool, but don't actually diagnose anything.  They just tell you the error codes and you have to pay to have the cause of the code investigated at £100/hr.  Does this seem to be a bit of a farce or am I expecting something for nothing?

    I suspect you're completely misunderstanding what "full health check of vehicle management systems using Hyundai diagnostic tester" (aka "reading any fault codes") actually involves. They plug the reader in, turn the ignition key, and see if it says "No faults found", or read the list if there are any.

    This will tell you there is a fault code. But... you already know there is, because the light is on. Not all codes put the light on.

    Reading the codes will say that the logged fault code is, say, P0314. That means "single cylinder misfire", but doesn't tell you which one. It certainly doesn't say why. You could have found that out for yourself with a <£5 bluetooth OBD dongle and a free app on your phone.

    What they will then charge you £100/hr for, plus parts, is then figuring out WHY that fault code has been logged, and resolving it. Why would you expect that to be free?

    £99 basic (£119 for a softroader) gives you oil and filter, and a quick once-round. But it also gives you a year's roadside breakdown cover.
    £169/£189 interim changes the air filter and diesel fuel filter, and brake fluid.
    £229/£249 full adds plugs and petrol fuel filter, pollen filter, coolant.
    Anything else gets done at extra labour and parts cost if they think it looks like it needs doing.

    Is this Hyundai still under warranty?
    If that is the case then you do not get a choice on the service they do if you want to keep the warranty intact.

    I only had my i10 serviced once by a Hyundai dealership, because there was an issue with the air conditioning that I thought might be covered by the 5-year warranty. The dealership was terrible and said that the air conditioning was working perfectly until I pointed out that it hadn't worked properly for months. They had my car back in and discovered that the compressor and condenser were faulty. They had the car in for three days as they replaced one component and then found that the other component was also faulty. All covered by the warranty, although I'd had the car serviced elsewhere (with invoices/service book stamped to prove it had been done).

    I would not take my car to a dealership again. The local dealership is not trustworthy. My husband has a Vauxhall and the local dealership is really shoddy and don't always do what they say they have done (or what they SHOULD have done, according to the service schedule) but he gets the lifetime warranty re-authorised each year so he thinks that it's worth it. I think that it's a total rip-off but it's his money to spend.

    It's all random what a main dealer can be bothered to do at a service. Nobody is really bothered. It's all about getting the 'stamp of goodwill'.
