Occasional Airbnb house let

Options
Hi all,

This is a slightly theoretical question due to the state of the world today, but I'm a bit curious in case this is something we want to do in future and was hoping some others might have experience or be able to shed some light.

So we've recently purchased a home in a town which normally has a big famous sporting event on a couple weekends in the year. This draws in lots of crowds, and lots of people wanting to stay in town that weekend. So as you can imagine, Airbnb prices go up a lot when this event is on, and it seems to me it might be an opportunity for us to plan our own break elsewhere on those particular weekends and rent the house out, effectively give ourselves a nice free holiday, wouldn't that be nice. In theory.

However of course as I understand it putting your house on Airbnb isn't that straightforward. I've read your mortgage or your insurance needs to be told about it and will probably charge you extra. But most of the advice I've read seems to assume that you are letting it out on a regular basis. If you only do it for one or two weekends a year, what is necessary and what isn't? Like obviously we don't need to change to a holiday let mortgage product like some sources suggest, as it's still very much our main residence and will continue to be so.

Anyway, if anyone has done something similar I'd be curious to know how feasible or otherwise such an idea may be. Thank you!

How is this going to work with all your personal stuff in the house and random strangers being in there and sleeping in your bed?

Rather than airbnb have you looked at letting agencies in the area that cater for such a market who might be able to better advise you? Just Google appropriate event accomodation and see what comes up. We previously had an apartment we let out in Paris but the agent was quite particular what standards she expected and advised accordingly but we did haave the advantage of her website and advertising. As well as appropriate insurance you need to factor in possible storage for personal property and professional cleaning before and after,
