Insurance Renewal Calamity

OK, so my insurance cover is due for renewal next month. Should be a simple process of just searching for the cheapest quote. But here's my problem, because I didn't own a car for the last 3 years I had to go back to the last company who insured me, as I didn't realise as soon as you've exceeded 24 months of not having car insurance it wipes out your no claims. Great eh!
So the company I've gone with have give me 5 years NCD at 70% discount. However, it's still in excess of £100 a month for a 15 year old 2L Suzuki Grand Vitara.
So I because I have 5 years NCD with the insurance company (should be 6 years when I take on a new policy, even though I had higher but that's obviously been nullified because of no active motor insurance policy)
Will I be able to search for a new policy, and legally claim I have 6 years NCD?
I would appreciate any feedback concerning this matter.

Depends what the renewal notice says. If its 6 years NCD then do the normal on compare the meerkats. If they gave you an introductory discount of 70% when you insured last year, now with a 1 year NCD then put in the 1 year NCD in the compare sites and see what the prices are like.
No idea if £100 a month is good or bad price, you may 23 living in London or 40 living in the middle of a field that's located in the middle of other fields.
Its been the way for the last 25+ years that can remember that NCD is invalid after 24 months of no insurance for most companies.

How does your new insurer describe the discount. Is it actually NCD, or an "introductory" or similar discount? If it really is an NCD it will show on your renewal notice.0

Could be fun when they ask for proof of NCDLife in the slow lane0

Wow £100 a month with 6 years NCD - I took out a new policy on a freelander TD4 a few years back with 0 ncd as I was using it on a different car, and that was only £45 a month! you either live in a dodgy area, are very young or have a good few points on your lience!0
