How do I identify the source?

I am in the process of moving house and have obtained my credit file as a result. I've noticed an old defaulted account but cannot locate any information around origin or company. There is a partial reference number quoted and a company name of "Provident". After extensive googling, several emails to various companies with the same name have returned no results. I have raised a dispute with Trans Union without success.
I am not necessarily disputing the value (if it's owed, it's owed) but I have no way to identify who this value is owed to and am can't even find the company claiming to be the creditor. I have no problem about paying the amount if genuine but need to know if there's a way to successfully identify the people I owe the money to please?
