Hey all,
Last November myself and my partner booked an around the world holiday for late september this year. To try and save money and have more control we booked all our flights and hotels independently rather than using a travel agent (which I feel could now come back to bite us!). Here's our itinerary:
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Norwegian London -> LA
Hotel in LA
Fiji Airways LA -> Fiji
Hotel 1 in Fiji (only paid deposit, same parent company as Hotel 2)
Hotel 2 in Fiji (only paid deposit, same parent company as Hotel 1)
Fiji Airways Fiji -> Sydney
Hotel in Sydney
Quatar Airlines -> Sydney to London.
Things to note:
I took out travel insurance back in November and everything was paid for via a credit card for extra protection.
------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm just very confused about what to do if certain flights are canceled - for example what if we can't fly to LA or what happens if Fiji won't accept tourists by the time our trip comes around and the other flights are still running?
Any guidance or advice would be amazing.
Thanks  :smile:

    have a good read of your travel insurance policy.
    Credit card would come into play if services Flights/accommodation are cancelled/closed and they don't refund you (go bust etc) but won't help if they are operating/open but a separate contract or government restrictions means you cannot use them
    Start having a look at the airlines/hotels website to see what they may be offering...reschedules etc
    keep checking https://www.iatatravelcentre.com/international-travel-document-news/1580226297.htm for updates on your destinations...eg currently you would not be allowed entry into US, Fiji or Australia (and I suspect that could still be the case in September)

    Well done for doing this independently. You have\had made the correct decision as trying to get a Travel agent to sort this would be full of frustration as is evident by numerous threads on here..

    1 What does your insurance cover when FCO says "Not to travel"? as this will be your major avenue to get refunds if the cost of the flights and hotels cannot be refund form the suppliers.

    2. As far as you know is the Norwegian flight still going?
    3. Is the Fiji flight still operating?
    4. Are the hotels costs refundable? Are they actually open?

    For the forseable future you will not be allowed into
    USA
    Fiji
    Australia

    The long and short of it is that any elements they cancel, not you will be eligible for a refund (although you may have to go through your card provider if they're uncooperative).
    Any parts that you choose not to use (even if your flights are cancelled and you can't get to the hotel, that isn't the hotel's fault) aren't eligible for a refund but you may be covered by your travel insurance. Also, if FCO advice advises against travel or you can't enter a country, that doesn't automatically mean you're eligible for a refund.

    Good luck!

    The reality is none of this is going to happen, Norwegian are not restarting transatlantic flights until December, and that may still depend on whether the US reopens for UK residents, it seems very unlikely at present. Without the ability to get to the US everything else falls by the wayside, Australia would put you into compulsory quarantine for 14 days on arrival, and charge you $2800 for the privilege! Norwegian are actually cancelling and refunding on a rolling basis, so that will be an easy issue to deal with, the rest may be more of a problem. You should check with Fiji Airways as to whether they are flying, I suspect not but if they are, there is no obligation to refund, and if the hotels are open they may be reluctant too. Best of luck
  • Qatar are quite flexible so you should be able to get some money back there.
