Learner insurance on car with no insurance on it

Options
We bought a car for my eldest daughter a couple of years ago and it was registered in her name. Unfortunately she has been diagnosed with epilepsy and cannot drive for 12 months.  My youngest daughter is now wanting to learn to drive and we want to use this car for her to learn in.
I need advice on insuring  - it looks as though it’s meant to be insured for the registered keeper, and then add the learners insurance for  but we can’t do that.   Can we leave the car in my elder daughters name and insure it ourselves?  I’m reluctant to transfer the car to me as that puts another owner on the log book.
I just need advice as I’m stuck as to what the best thing is to do.

You don't need to be registered keeper to insure it, you just need to say correctly who the registered keeper is when asked the question.

A couple of insurance companies on comparison sites may not quote if they're different but generally speaking it won't make any difference. Most importantly, make sure you correctly identify the main driver, ie who will be using the car the most, as well.

You can insure in your name, but as the main driver will be no.2 daughter it's probably simpler for her to be the insured. The RK being another family member shouldn't be a problem.

Add-on "learner insurance" is meant to add a learner to a car that's mainly being used by somebody else.

So if daughter was learning on your main car - you'd insure that in your name, as the main driver, then get add-on learner cover for when she's having lessons with you.

In this case, the car's mainly going to be driven by the learner? She insures in her name. It gets her off to a start with NCB, apart from anything else...

I also wouldn't worry about the additional keeper as it's in the family and can be easily proved at time of sale. Just keep a photocopy of the old reg document as the DVLA don't identify previous keepers on it any longer.

Both my daughters learned to drive in the last 3 years & both times I took out 12 month learner insurance.

This cost just over £300 for the full 12 months - as I remember 6 months cover wasn't all that much cheaper.

Worked out well as both of them took just over 11 months before sitting / passing their test so both benefited from a years no claims on their firsts years "normal" insurance.

Her indoors & I were both also added as named drivers.

It was Adrian Flux that we went with - they were willing to price match a competitor (Collingwood) who were slightly cheaper but only allowed one named driver.

As already said - the registered keeper wont be an issue.
Was it really "everybody" that was Kung Fu fighting ???

Thank you for your help. It looks as though getting number 2 daughter insured in her own right on her sisters car will be the best option.
