Should I take any precautions around friends or relatives who may visit with a smartphone/device with iPlayer etc installed on them?
Your visitor's can legally use iplayer from their phone on your wifi if they have their own TV licence but no one will ever know if they do anyway.

Ah - I'd have thought they'd have been able to trace you somehow ...

Strange thing is my partner and I almost feel like we're doing something wrong by not renewing - even though we don't use the services.
Don't worry, you soon get over that feeling.

  • On my Smart TV If I select a program to watch on BBC1 or BBC i player AFTER it has already started I ,more often than not , get asked if I want to watch it LIVE or FROM THE START.
If ,therefore, I choose to watch it from the start .....I AM NOT WATCHING IT LIVE.
Is this a way around the  "BBC money grabbing". as I often use this ability when I am unable to watch a programme from the start.   IF this is a way around the BBC rules and the BEEB  stops this ability then it would be a mistake on their part as I am sure there must be viewers like myself who cannot always sit down to watch a programme when it starts. ...........more VERY annoyed BBC viewers.
I would also like to add that if I were to pay the BBC licence fee I would be annoyed to know that I would be putting more of my small pension into some of the presenters already bulging pockets i.e, Gary Lineker's reported salary of £1,75  million ..... WHY is that ridiculous amount necessary.... and do we really need ex pro football players to summarise a football game that we have just watched and drawn our own conclusions to.......at such a high cost ... Alan Shearer adds another £400,000+.for his comments. Work it out for yourselves  "Match of the Day"  comments from the 2 or 3 other ex players Lineker has in the studio with him equates to around  £3 million a year of our licence money......and that figure doesn't take into consideration that the football season is only around 10 months of the year so they get a couple of months holiday.
These are only a couple, and I have to say I did like Lineker and Shearer as great football players but not as  Highly Overpaid BBC employees.
If you would like to see where.much of your licence fee goes  Just go on line and search for a list of BBC salaries........I'm sure you'll be surprised.

The law was changed a few years ago, you now need a TV licence to watch anything on BBC iPlayer.

Well - my partner has decided that we should renew as "you never know" (!?) ... Thank you for all the advice. Hopefully we can somehow manage to justify the expense.

I understand where they are coming from as I recently cancelled my TV licence as I do not watch anything that would require one, but it feels very strange and almost like I am doing something wrong - the thought has occurred to me too to get a licence purely because of this feeling but so far I realise just how stupid that would be and that it will take a while to get rid of the 'tv licence programming' that we have had since birth that we MUST have a tv licence!

Regarding making sure I am compliant I did the following:
removed my freesat box (sold to CEX!)
I don't have an aerial anywhere
removed iPlayer and other apps such as TVPlay from all my devices

So, even if I was desperate to watch something on live tv I would be unable to. I still have a satellite dish up outside because who knows ten years down the line whether I will want Sky or anything, and it is still wired up with cables going to the living room, but I have taken the connectors off the end of the cables to so it cannot be used.

Couldn't think of anything else to remove...
    Mortgage free!
    Debt free!

And now I am retired - all the time in the world!!
  • And the BBC are so stupid by making some of their content (not live) on Youtube!
My licence cancellation came into effect 31st July. Aerial and satellite downlead disconnected.
Direct Debit cancelled. They (Crapita) state, in a confirmation letter that I will be contacted next July to make a further declaration. No, don't engage in any communication with them at all. Also never visit TV Licensing's website.
They have also just employed 800 more "enforcement" goons too. I thought the BBC were short of money?

They need all those extra goons to threaten the over 75's.

The enforcement people are employed by TV licensing, not by the BBC. They collect the money and then pass 97.5% of it over to the BBC. The 2.5% of it pays for the cost of collection and billing.

I've not seen any full-length programming put on YouTube officially by the BBC?

I think that it is the BBC that employs Capita and TV Licensing is a trademark. Capita states that it visits over 3 million homes each year and collects as a result of this £65 million.

I calculate that the effective recovery fee per home visit is £21.66.

I have osteoarthritis in my hands so I speak my messages into a microphone using Dragon. Some people make "typos" but I often make "speakos".

Presumably, Capita agents will receive special training for dealing with the over 75s. Perhaps fear tactics will be part of their armoury.
