TUI unable to amend flights on-line despite email saying that we could

We are due to travel to Turkey on 8th Aug. We received an email from Tui late 7th July to say that we could change the flight by calling or online and the deadline date for any amendment was 10th July. Email said that it can be done by calling in or online. We were keen to move it as we have my elderly mother travelling with me who was anxious about the trip, therefore we wanted to reschedule for next year.
Despite what the email said, online tool was not allowing the change in dates; I could only add or remove a passenger. WRT phone, I was on the phone upto 4 hours but the phone call was dropping or no one answered. When I eventually got through to them which was on the 11th July, the advisor said that I missed the deadline and the cost to change was £2700+ (more expensive then my original flights). Not sure where I stand with this. I have written in, tweeted a message to them, called a number of times but have had no luck. On the last call, the agent accused me of telling lies about on-line tool not allowing to rebook!
