    I would drill holes into the remainder of the root and pour in plenty of liquid root killer to finish it off.

    Yeah, its defiinitely not THAT big... Mine's feelng a little bit itty bitty now..It's only seven foot across at the base....

    Well, in my experience fir or leylandii burns well although I like to debark it, which is a curiously therapeutic activity with a paint scraper! The rounds from my neighbour's tree were very large and I was really fit the winter it came down.. ;-)

    My big one had 17 trunks, the small one had 5, possibly more as I'm only going off photos on my phone.

    My one is recorded somewhere or other as one of Britain's most notable trees. It's some kind of Douglas Fir. The Forestry Commission have now stuck a fence around it , but it's a darn sight older than they are.

    If you cut it off at the base, the roots will die. I’d drill holes into the stump that is left to accelerate the rotting process, although that could take many years.
