My guess is it's continual service (ie. 2 years).

LIFO should be a last resort, ie in the event of a tie between two employees. Otherwise it's not good practice at all. Even then...

I think you just really need to make the case in your consultation meetings that your previous service should count in your favour.

    Good luck.

I agree it is a bad way to choose but they can.
  • I have been refused voluntary severance due to failing the criteria of length of service. I have 14+ years. I have severe health problems ( heart disease and copd) also anxiety.depression and dystonia. I thought it only fair to tell the company about this but was told they couldnt take this into consideration.  Is this correct? Also would the new company be able to get rid of me due to health issues? Would i still receive my severance payment? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Voluntary severance has no legal standing. Any payment, length of notice etc is whatever is negotiated between employer and employee. The employer can set the rules of eligibility. Entirely up to them if they decide not to take health problems into consideration
