Insurance Claim Excess-Who do I pay?

We had an "at fault" accident back in February and took the car to an approved repair shop. The insurance company approved repairs and all ok. This morning I received a letter from the repair shop asking me to pay them the insurance excess. Does this sound right as I assumed the insurance company would collect the excess?
