You need to get the meter removed and the supply capped. There may be a charge for doing this.

If you are trying to avoid the standing charge, it isn't enough to just have it turned off, you would have to pay to have it physically disconnected and capped off.
The only exception to this is if you have just taken over a property but have not yet used any gas. Once you have used it at all you would have to pay to get it removed.
Depending on how long you intend to be there it may be cheaper to just look for a supplier with a low standing charge but higher per kWh prices, but those are getting harder to find these days...

They do cap it off in this borough east London free,  Mears the contractors said they still have to come out every year and  check  it ?

That might be capping the supply after the meter. You need to get the meter removed and the supply capped to avoid standing charges. Do you own the property?

Sooner or later I suspect that your pipe will have to be severed at the point where it connects to the main supply: if you aren't paying anything, you can't expect an emergency call out if it leaks or is fractured.
I think that zero standing charges have effectively disappeared and that the best you can hope for will be a tariff with a low standing charge.  Ebico Zero does have no standing charge, but a minimum spend of £52 per year.
If you own the property, severing the gas supply will make it much less atractive if you want to sell it, and it will be expensive to reconnect it.  The property devaluation will probably exceed any saving you might have made.
  • Even if getting it removed might end up being free, it's worth finding out how much it might cost to set it back up in the future.
If you don't need it now you'll unlikely need it in the future, however it's always worth finding out before hand just in case.

If your question is how to turn the gas off? Then the answer is you do this at the meter by turning the lever to off. You still pay any standing charges?

If your question is how to disconnect the gas then you pay to get the meter removed and supply capped.

If you want to reconnect in future you pay again.

You can do this if you own the property and are willing to take the hit on a lower property valuation if you ever decide to sell.

I am assuming you are all electric, so what is the occasional use of gas you refer to?

Personally I would just change to a provider with the lowest standing charge and keep the gas. But it is your money.
