Deposit Stolen by bogus Painter

Hi, I gave a £250 deposit to a painter  (James Platt - H&R Plastering and Property Maintenance, Leamington Spa) to secure a slot to paint our house. He did not turn up, will not give me a revised date and has not returned the deposit. He even lied about a family bereavement. Can you tell me what I need to do to get my money back and make sure this doesn't do it again. Bark.com only allows you to review them, not report them as a bogus operator.

    Do you have his business address?
    Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
    Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

    Get the business address then send a letter before action, giving him 14 days to return the deposit otherwise you will take him to court for the money.

    In the mean time, I suggest putting polite messages on social media asking him to return the deposit ASAP as he was unable to complete the work.

    Mogey1's fate is unknown. He posted 2 years ago, read the replies 4 days later, thanked us and has not been back since.
