I am sitting here in my kitchen huddled up in my new dressing gown, full length chocolate brown soft and fluffy and i don't care that it clashes with my purple fluffy socks :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: it's just soooooooo cold in the house.

You think you are clashing elly!! I bet I look worse. I have a pink and grey strippy nightie to my ankles, a pair of grey pj bottoms, pink and white stippy socks (like bagpuss) a multi coloured thick cardigan 10 years old and 4 sizes too big and a pair of mens slippers on.

Oh and I spilt baked beans down my nightie too!!

P.s I am going to go and get changed in a minute, I am not usually this scruffy

Be careful of gas fires. We ran up a huge bill with using ours...

Yes - luckily I had the opportunity to test mine, because my new house had a PAYG meter for the first two months (before I got it changed last week).

When my sensitive friend came over and had it on full blast all day / evening, it was costing a couple of quid per day  . But my brief evening usage brings me in at about £8 a month :p .

Don't forget, if you are on certain benefits (including tax credits to a certain level) you can get help to insulate your home...including cavity wall insulation.... http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/proxy/view/full/2019/grantsandofferssearch

I put a double duvet on the sofa, then sit on it with my feet up - and pull the other half of the duvet back over me.

If that fails (rarely does - I am usually sweltering) then I'd put a pillow over my feet too. If I can keep my feet hot the rest follows.

Also - it's worthwhile noting that most body heat loss is out of your head, so stick on a beanie hat. I got mine from the £1 shop.
  • If I put a duvet and a pillow on my sofa I'd never go to bed. Hot water bottles and electric blankets are good sources of heat. (not at the same time!!!). I agree that if your feet are warm the rest of your body seems to cope better with the cold. I've been using my gas fire instead of my gas central heating thinking that it costs less. Am I wrong?
  • Quick question how high are you bills ours our around £300 a quater (gas and electric).

  • I have pre payment meters becuase I am 4 weekly paid and don't want to have huge bills at inconvinient times, but it is expensive. Electric £60 per month all year, gas £5 per week in summer £15 in winter. My house is cold at the moment too, heating comes on at 4pm for the kids benefit. I am going back to kint on my knitting machine in a minute, just having a tea break. That gets me hot.
