No response from Travel insurer, 3 months on...

Hello,
wondering what my next move should be...
Our plans were cancelled due to coronavirus just before last year's travel insurance expired, so as that was the policy in place at cancellation, that is from whom I need to claim.
We had booked flights separate from a villa rental.
Our flight was cancelled by the operator and we got our refund 1 month later (after a few nudges by phone).
So the claim is for the villa rental.
The insurer's phone line at the time advised yes you can claim, & within a couple of months would be soon enough.
We had to wait until the flights refund was resolved before claiming, obviously.
We put in our claim on 27 April. The auto-reply said "contact us again if you've heard nothing in 21 days".
A nudge after that time and we finally got a claim number (21 May), but have heard nothing at all since.
Latest nudge by email was on 07 July - their advice now says "if you've heard nothing within 40 working days..."
This is a concern, like a company from whom you're expecting a delivery to keep pushing the delivery date back. Alarm bells!
So, wondering what opinion is on what to do next. There appears to be no way to contact them by phone now as the insurers and the claim handlers appear to be different companies. Ombudsman time?
Would welcome some considered advice, if anyone has some.
