It’s fine if you’re spending at JL and WR on a regular basis.
But for spending elsewhere its the same rate as any other reward/cashback card now.

The Amazon Card earns more now for Prime Members at a rate of 1.5% on Amazon purchases and 0.25% elsewhere.

Can I also point out it is not 1.25% at Waitrose and JL - it is a maximum of 1.25% if all your shopping there comes to an exact multiple of £4.

In fact, you could buy a £3.99 juice and sandwich for lunch at Waitrose every day for 100 years and not get a single point.

Edit: my post is incorrect see below.

1.25% on foreign currency is decent though, especially as they have a competitive rate to start with...

Are the points awarded per transaction or on the total each month?  If it's on the total then you have more chance of getting to that 1.25%.

Clause 2c of the Partnership Card reward programme rules:
You will earn Points only on the whole pounds Sterling amount of each Eligible Purchase.

Yes, per transaction ie per use of the card.

For the avoidance of doubt, this means when you go to the till and pay with you card, you will be awarded 5 points for each £4 of the bill.
  • I think this multiples of £4 is a red herring.

    From Partnership Card website:

Points are calculated on each eligible purchase with any fractions of a point rounded down.

e.g. until 3 September 2020 a £11.99 purchase in John Lewis or Waitrose earns 11 points, while a £11.99 purchase in another supermarket would earn 5 points. After 4 September 2020 a £11.99 purchase in John Lewis or Waitrose earns 14 points, while a £11.99 purchase in another supermarket would earn 2 points.

I am interpreting this as you get 1 point per 80p spent with whole pounds not required, just whole points.

That is really weird because the letter I received says 5 points per £4 spent, not 1 point per 80p spent....

Edit: I have just called them and they said whole pounds are multiplied by 1.25 so an £11.99 spend would earn £11 x 1.25 points and £3 spend would earn £3 x 1.25 points (in JL or Waitrose of course).

In any event, the very significant reduction in benefits for non-JL Partnership spending seems very short-sighted to me. Retailers pay considerably more in transaction fees than the existing 0.50% reward plus the rewards themselves can only be spent within the Partnership, boosting profitable turnover.  Why would John Lewis want to discourage use of their Mastercard in favour of more lucrative providers?
