Refund on amendment fees

Last year I was going to cancel my Tui holiday due to a terminal illness of a relative. Tui informed me I could pay £50 each and change it to this year which I did. Tui have informed me my holiday has been cancelled by them due to covid but not entitled to my amendment fee back, Does this seem correct? I am not the one who has moved the goal post, any suggestions, Many thanks

The £50 pp fee was to move the holiday from 2019 to 2020.  The fee was paid at the time, and the work was done.  To use your analogy, you are the one who moved the goalpost last year, and paid the price to change the booking (otherwise, presumably the deposit , and maybe more, would have been lost).

The fact that they have now had to cancel the holiday in 2020 still doesn't change the fact that the booking was moved and the fee for that service was paid.  I appreciate it was very unfortunate circumstances that caused you to move the booking, and it's unfortunate the holiday is now cancelled, but I think they're probably not wrong here.

You moved the goalposts initially by amending it, and that's what the fee was for.
You're not entitled to this back, as the holiday was amended as requested - and it was your decision not to travel at the time.
