So after months of trying to change a package holiday with lastminute.com with no success I paid the balance on Monday to find out on Wednesday the flights have been cancelled. Where do I stand on getting a full refund, do I contact my bank and arrange a charge back or wait god knows how long for lastminute to respond and sort this out?

That’s tough. If it was a package lastminute.com are obligated to give you a refund within 14 days. They’ll try to do anything but, and offer you a voucher. They cancelled my return flight, leaving me stranded on 19th March and I haven’t had an offer of any sort from them yet.

Chargebacks are also subject to lengthy delays. I’ve been waiting over 10 weeks for Barclaycard. They finally replied on Friday -  to request another document. The only means of contact is post. I had to print it off and stick it in the post box. Goodness knows how long they will take to even look at it.

Sorry to be the bringer of bad news- if I sound annoyed, it’s because I am.
  • Thanks for your reply. They are a nightmare! They've got till Monday then I will go through my bank or travel insurance.

Were you not aware the Flights had been cancelled at the time you paid the balance ?
I'm surprised they took the balance as whenever the Flights were cancelled effectively so was your holiday.

My balance is due next week but they sent me an e-mail a few weeks ago extending the date it had to be paid by as the situation was unclear as to whether the trip would go ahead.

As I am supposed to be going to the USA in three weeks time there is no way the vacation is going to proceed. I am not expecting them to ask for it as even they are not stupid enough to think anyone would be gullible enough to cough up for a dead duck an American Trip is at the moment.
  • They kept extending when to pay the balance then the day before the last extention I paid it. It was only when I called them after 2 days later they told me the flights were cancelled. I'm now pursuing my refund and speaking to the ombudsman on Monday about this matter.

we are still waiting for a refund from march, they will no longer answer phones or email or social media messages, im at a loss as what to do next, we accepted a voucher early on in march when you could still talk to someone but have not received anything or any correspondence, I will never use them again
  • I am in a similar position as madcat74 - had flights booked in April and managed to get through to LM then and they said they were unaware that the flights didn’t go ahead but now that I had reported it (!) they would send me an email to get my claim started. Never did and now there is no way through on the phone lines. Even the customer service line which costs 13p per min goes nowhere so don’t waste your time or money! Does anyone know if banks or travel insurance will pay out? They seem to be on the point of collapse.

They aren't on the point of collapse. They're a listed company and last time I looked they were doing quite well.
They are totally obstructive however, and I'm certainly of the view that I made a huge mistake in booking through them.

Well I had a Package Holiday with them booked to leave for Florida on August 8th.

About a Month ago BA contacted me directly to advise me the flights inward and outward had been cancelled. Shortly afterwards LM advised me they were going to change the date my balance was due from July 9th to July 23rd. This would give them time to check with the suppliers whether my holiday would be going ahead. If not they said they would not take the balance and inform me how I would receive a refund of my deposit.

Yesterday was the 23rd and guess what they tried to take the balance of £3700 odd from my card. Luckily I had foreseen this scenario weeks ago and "lost" the plastic registered with them. My home page says someone will be in touch with me to discuss my options - you couldn't make it up.

Wondering what they will do next, but relieved I will only be battling to get £400 odd Deposit back rather than four grand.
