Used car replacement

Options
I bought a used car from a dealership. 8799 on the screen and paid 8200. First day after buying a heavy rainfall revealed lots and lots of scratches all over the car which  they had just buffed over they said they would put it right when paint shop returned from furlough. It had no second key they said where to go to get one done at their expense
He couldn't do it then their own ford dealership could not do it then the computer went faulty and they replaced it and spoke with ford technical to sort the spare key. All done except the paintwork
I rang them and said I have lost all faith in car and wanted to return it. I said i would be fair and buy something s bit more expensive.
They got a car in that I wanted and told me if I paid 1800 more I could have it. The paperwork showed the price of the new car was 8600.
So all they gave me for the duff 8200 car was 6800.
There reason was the vat has gone immediately we bought it.
Surely a refund gets their vat as well. Is this right and above all else is it legal.
 Hope someone can help advise.
Mark

You didn't return it under consumer rights legislation... So it's all down to whatever the two of you agree. And you agreed +£1,800 to exchange.

Was there a reason you didn't see the paint and count the keys before buying?

If you get a refund, the VAT is credited back as well through normal VAT processes.

VAT on used cars is not that much usually as they don't add VAT on the whole cost, only the 'margin'.  If you had paid VAT on the full amount and the £8,200 included VAT, then the full VAT in that would be only £1,367 not £1,800.

As above, you didn't get a refund, you part-exchanged it. You cant expect to sell a car to a garage as a trade in for the same price as a garage would sell it for on the forecourt.....

The stuff about VAT is utter nonsense. The cars value is driven by the market. It has nothing to do with VAT.

There is no reason you have to part exchange to this dealer, or indeed even part exchange it at all. You could take it to any garage or dealer anywhere in the country and get a quote, or sell it online privately for slightly more if the market dictates it.
Then just take whatever you sell it for + any shortfall and buy the new car.
