Floor to ceiling mirror wardrobes... aarrgghh!!

We have floor to ceiling mirrored wardrobe doors in our bedroom , they were here when we moved in and to be honest the wardrobes inside are huge with lots of hanging space and wire drawers and they hide all the clutter etc .. but I loathe the mirrors... there are five doors on two bedroom walls and every which way I look I see myself and believe me sometimes its not nice....:rotfl: We really can't afford to buy new doors they seem so expensive and not sure if they would fit on the runners... so I was just wondering if anyone could come up with a suggestion to cover them up so I don't have to see myself day and night in all my glory... .. and of course cleaning them takes me ages as any little smear looks awful... so any suggestions before I decide that they really have to go completely and I start saving for new wardrobes?

I wouldnt like all those mirrors either lol!
I know you can get spray for frosting windows for bathrooms etc so I wonder if that would work. Maybe tape a small design on the mirror, spray over it with the spray and when you take the tape off there is a little bit of mirror showing but the rest is frosted.
I don't know for sure you can use this on mirrors though.
Edit - this is it, its Plasticote

Also you can get film but thats probably tricky on a large area like a door.

  • Like lindens said don't bother with the film, I tried it on ours when we had HUGE mirrored doors & I ended up with more frosted film on myself than the doors, one thing I would suggest if you go for plasti-kote is open the windows wide, close the door & wear a mask when you spray it on.

Be prepared to buy a lot of tins though as it doesn't go very far.

    Why don't you wallpaper them?

Could you hang curtains just in front of them?

Nothing fancy, just homemade unlined would be fine - you could either hang chiffon in front of the glass, or just replace the doors with curtains (and stick the doors on Freecycle for good karma). As long as they're fairly light, you only need curtain wire to hang them on, and you can hem them up to the correct length.

Thanks folks some interesting suggestions there.... I was planning on leaving just one to be used as full length mirror but I guess the others really could go... and a fine curtain might work , also never thought of wallpapering them.. that sounds like a good idea and as I am planning on redecorating the room in the new year that might work well..... I will chat with OH see what he thinks of the ideas so far.....:T food for thought.... thanks.. keep em coming ....

    I'd look at:
    - hanging thin gossamer material curtains in front (or voiles), probably by hanging a new curtain pole on the ceiling.
    - probably look at the size/cost of frosting sheets - I'd avoid spray as I'm rubbish
    - look at coloured stick on sheets for cost/doability
    - see if I could simply reverse the mirrors
    - wallpaper - or paint with emulsion

If your concern is mainly based around seeing yourself while you're lying/sat in bed - then simply frost a middle horizontal area and leave the rest.

We had these in our previous home- nightmare to keep clean but great storage. In the end we took doors off and hung floor length curtains and it was much better. HTH
