Seiss Grant Query

Hi, does anyone know if you are eligible and claim the second SEISS Grant and then take temporary employment (PAYE) but decide to not go back to your original Self employed trade Is this ok or  MUST you return to your original role?
Thanks

You have to intend to continue to trade when you claim. The easiest way of proving that, if asked, is to continue with the original trade.

I understand your dilemma. While having every intention of continuing in my (failing) business, if someone offered me a job tomorrow I might take it. This grant is offered at the end of the period it covers. My business was disrupted from March, and the first grant covered March, April and May, so I applied for it. The next one covers June, July and August when my business was further disrupted so I'm applying for that one too. I guess my point is that by the time the grant arrives, the period it covers has already happened.

No-one can predict the future and given the govt are trying to get the economy moving again, I'm fairly sure no-one would expect you to turn down work. I'm confident that my intentions at the moment mean I'm eligible to apply, and if I'm asked to repay it at some point then I'll do that. With my sudden drop in income, this grant has been a lifesaver and I'm using the time to try and develop the services I offer, be more flexible and improve the chance of my business surviving.

    Good luck whatever you decide.

It does not matter what period the grants are supposed to cover (and they don't cover specific months anyway). You have to intend to continue to trade at the date you claim, as it is one of the eligibility criteria. You won't be asked to pay it back just because your business picks up in say August rather than September.

I am not sure that your interpretation of periods covered by the second grant is correct.  Not even sure that specific periods apply.

A specific criteria for the second SEISS grant is that the business is adversely affected by coronavirus  on or after 14th July.  Disruption in June is irrelevant.  No one can yet know if their business is disrupted in August.
  • Good evening, we are having massive problems with the first seiss grant. My partner applied on the date specified which was May. We have called numerous times, promised by the staff numerous times that the grant will be paid. We were told this week that it has got stuck in processing! My partner has not received a penny. It’s so stressful and pretty heart breaking as the mortgage lender is refusing our application until they can see the grant being paid into our account. We will lose our first home due to the error and failure to pay the grant. We have complained verbally and writing but will take 15 days, the building company will pull out way before then. Amy advice welcomed thank you
  • Sorry, I meant any advice welcomed. Just noticed my mistake

Yep, you're correct, the grant is not related to specific months. Sorry to confuse things. Martin's guides explain it as being linked to March, April and May, but do acknowledge that the government are not linking it in this way.

I believe it is possible to predict how your business will be affected in the coming months. I had regular clients I did work for every month on a long term basis. The majority have ended our arrangement as their businesses are also failing, the remaining ones are hanging on by a thread. If I thought things were going to return to normal next month that would be fairly naive. It took longer than 6 weeks to set it up in the first place, no reason I could do it faster in this economic climate.

OP, you're the only one who knows if you meet the criteria. 'Intention' sounds like a woolly concept to try and prove. Keep your business registered and surely than means you plan to keep it going if you can? If your business has lost more income than the usual month to month variation then apply for help.

This would be better as a separate thread to avoid confusion and"crossed" responses.
