My mother lived in rented accommodation (housing association for elderly). She paid in advance each month and she died 2 days after the rent was paid so presume she will be due a refund (quite a large sum of money). She paid by direct debit but now that the bank has frozen the account will the refund be rejected and if it is will I as executor be informed or will I have to get the association to write a cheque for the amount. She should also have a refund from the local council for the service she paid for also in advance.

I doubt that your mother will receive a refund for the month that he died, but others may disagree with me.

Rent will still apply until you have cleared her accommodation. There may also be deductions if the place is not retuned in the condition it was in when she first moved in, so your assumption may not be correct.
Any monies that are owed should be paid to her executor, not returned to her bank account.0 -

You should write to the housing association requesting a final balance statement, they are not going to automatically refund to a deceased persons account.0
