Hiya,
My friend has given me her pc to look at which is throwing up the following error after booting up.
Stop C000021a {fatal system error}
The windows logon process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of OXC000005 (0X00000000)
The system has shut down. (blue screen of death showing this)
Can anyone shed any light on how I can fix this for her if it's fixable at all. The system is running Windows XP and in safe mode it shows the user names (my friend and the administrator) but no luck in logging on.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for this but unfortunately I can't get logged into an account to get to a command prompt to run the Dr Watson.
Any idea how I can bypass the log on to get to the command prompt?
Once again thank you.0 -
If you have an XP CD you may have to perform a system repair. See link below for info.

Alas I don't think I've got an xp disk as both my copies were pre - loaded onto my pc with recovery disks.
I might have (can't remember if I threw it out) a copy of XP Professional, but I'm pretty sure it's the home edition which is on this pc, if I can find this will it be ok to use it?
Once again thanks.0 -
Not 100% sure but suspect you can use Home or Prof to repair a system.
Good luck.
Just looked on the link I sent you and it says
"you can use an OEM XP Pro or Home, "retail" XP Home or Pro full or upgrade version CD of the same version Home or Pro to perform a Repair Install. OEM Restore disks or hidden restore folders on the hard drive will not work for the Repair Install."
SO you should be ok with any version of XP.

Thank you so much for this, I'll go and try and find my copy, just wish I knew what I'd done with it or it will be a request on freecycle for a copy to try and sort it out.
I think it's spyware which has caused the initial problem or a virus as it turns out she has nothing on the pc to protect herself.
I'll work on it, and I'll let you know how I get on (or my son if he decides he wants to do it).
Once again thanks for taking the time to reply and fingers crossed we get it up and running.0
