Virgin Atlantic Credit Card

Hi all.
Wanting to use the hive mind!
We currently have the BA Amex to collect avios points which we use towards flights to Florida.   This is a paid card that we pay £195 a year for as it has a lower spending threshold (£10,000 compared to £20,000) for the free version.   However, as Amex isn't used everythwere we thought we would also pay for the Virgin Atlantic card to get similar companion flight.   Now we know we won't spend as much on the Virgin Atlantic card but the golf membership I pay each year for 8 people is circa £8,000 so it would be easy to reach the £10,000 threshold for companion ticket.   My question is this.   On the terms and conditions of the card, it states that:
You’ll earn 1.5 Flying Club miles for every £1 you spend on card purchases. You won’t earn Flying Club miles on cash advances, balance transfers, money transfers, interest or fees.
I will spend nowhere near enough on the card if the £8,000 golf memberships are not included, but would they fall into the category above?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Golf Membership is a purchase and so counts towards points/rewards... why do you think it wouldn't?
  • I'm not sure.  It would just be a complete waste of money without it as we would never get the points otherwise.

Ok, thought maybe you hadn't mentioned that you use the credit card to get cash which you then pay the golf club with.

We are in a similar position using AmEx to get MR points that can be converted to Avios, VS miles etc and the Virgin Atlantic card for backup and bonus VS miles... you have reminded me that need to see about our companion voucher as I think its expiring soon.

Personally, I liked VS' Upper class when it was launched (haven't tried the new version) and where it used to fly but since they've become more and more USA centric they've been of less interest to us (hence a nearly expired voucher)… I accept we are a bit odd in not finding the USA in any way exciting to visit.
  • Thanks @Sandtree.   We have a timeshare in Florida so will fly there a lot so it makes sense to have both options.  It would still be a CC purchase but I just wanted to make sure it wasnt some loophole that we would miss out on as the BA Amex is our everyday spend.
Do you have both paid cards?

Our AmEx is a paid card but we don't pay for it. The VA we went for the free option because I don't have any big annual purchases that cannot go onto the AmEx so not worth paying the extra to get the lower companion voucher target.

Does the golf club not accept AMEX?
We have 2 paid BA AMEX so get 2 vouchers a year since we each spend more than £10k PA. The higher accrual rate of the paid for card is also an advantage over the free one.
So if your spend between your and your wife is over £20k PA then maybe think about opening a second account in her name and of course you refer her for your referral bonus.
