Debt letter

Hello all.
Can anyone help.
I worked for the NHS September 2018. It wasn't the job for me so I left, got paid for the time i was there, but then the month after, i got paid again. Tried to repay it back. Cut a long story short, I have numerous emails over several months to try and repay the money back and had no response or help. On Friday just gone, I get a letter from a debt agency say I owe money. Never had anything before, I panicked and paid, I have been in contact with the nhs since and they say and have had an email to say, this is not their protocol for recovering monies. They wrote an email to me to confirm this.
The company is Icon collections. Not sure if that's relevant?
I contacted my bank as I dont know if it was a fraudulent company. The bank instantly stopped the money. I will phone the debt company again tomorrow, but is this normal??
I have never disputed the over payment, I have been trying to repay it back, I just cant make it happen. This just seems strange that the nhs have no record, I've never been contacted and this has come out of the blue??

I’d advise not using the phone.

Get everything in writing. I would be writing to them to verify the debt & a breakdown and log a formal dispute. Seems odd NHS have said what they have in response to your queries.

What does the letter say exactly? You have a right to clarify the debt they are trying to make you pay.

OP you should never pay a debt based on receiving a letter, always check to see what the debt is for.

Thank you both. I've never been in this position before. So I'm quite anxious to be honest. The letter doesnt reflect the apparent debt, the letter originally stated i owed money for a medical account for patient treatment, hence i phoned them, I know I acted to quick now but I didn't know what to do, I panicked, I have someone who is helping me tomorrow, this is not something I've had to deal with before.

As long as you haven't lost any money, and you have someone to help you. Phew!  Best not to panic in future, you can lose money that way. As is often said (but I'm not sure where, if I'm honest), only scammers will tell you to act immediately, if not before. Is this even your debt?

I would suspect the NHS have in place a system where money owed is automatically passed to a DCA to collect, but never panic pay, always write and ask for  proof of the debt.
Legally they must respond with evidence or cease collection activities.
Most collection letters state immediate payment required so it’s probably genuine.
