Packlink eBay - Excessive underpayment charge?

I used Packlink to send a fold up bike via UPS on 31/05/20 .
Today I got an email from Packlink to say I underpaid UPS and sent an oversized package. When booking I don't remember seeing any total dimensions - just the maximum length that my item was under.
I am happy to pay a price if it was my fault for not seeing the small print but the charge taken today from my PayPal account a few hours after receiving the email was for £60 (£50 + vat). Is this a normal charge for an oversized package?

Was it in a box or a bumpy bicycle shape covered in packaging?  Some carriers only accept recangular boxes and no doubt surcharge if they find something that doesn't conform to their rules.

This is why I don't like third party brokers , they never get a sender to check the courier requirements and just assume they have already done so by adding small print asking sender to confirm that they have read the T and Cs.

    This is what UPS say
    https://www.ups.com/gb/en/help-center/packaging-and-supplies/determine-billable-weight.page#:~:text=Your%20UPS%20package%20is%20considered,maximum%20size%20of%20400%20cm.

Your UPS package is considered a Large Package when its length plus girth [(2 x width) + (2 x height)] combined exceeds 300 cm, but does not exceed the maximum size of 400 cm.

I would think a bike would exceed the above noted sizes whilst still being within the overall length maximum.

  • I would be totally wary about getting such a claim for extra charges from Packlink. I am currently disputing one where they claim UPS have said that the package was oversized. I know that this is not the case and when digging deeper into it it looks like Packlink are known for sending out claims for false charges. Many have disputed this asking for proof of the charge (i,e email details from courier about extra charge) and for some strange reason they cant back up the claim with evidence from the courier !!!.
I intend to fight mine and hope that an official body will start some form of investigation into them as its basically fraud.
