This happens all the time and will continue to do so.
I used to receive emails for a lecturer in a US university. His students were corresponding about their coursework and lack of feedback.
By the time I noticed and figured out a way of notifying him, he'd moved jobs anyway.

I have same rare surname as a semi-famous person (maybe not a household name but well known in her field) but I own the surname.com domain and have done for the past 20 years so I get all emails sent to xxxx@surname.com while she owns the @herfullname.com domain. Occasionally I get emails for her sent to first@surname.com rather than xxxx@herfullname.com - I haven't seen anything confidential or embarrassing but I will forward anything which looks important. I never get a thanks.
I would be willing to sell her the @surname.com for the right price and I could switch to @myfullname.com. £10,000 would be reasonable, I think.
