Google Maps update without a connection!

I only use my phone on Wifi, and while passing the time waiting for someone, I loaded the Maps app. I then noticed that there was a download arrow in the notification area, when I tapped it, it showed that three offline maps were updating. I checked to see that data was still turned off, and looked to see if I could be connected to WiFi, and neither were connected. How can that happen?

Updating isn't the same as downloading.0

On occasion the "updating" tag can get stuck, particularly if it was updating when last connected to Wifi. Once you get back in range of Wifi, it'll carry on and finish.

Hello Neil. Thanks for your reply. The progress bar moved to completion, all without a connection!

But if it had completed when there was a connection, why did the update show a progress bar without a connection? Also, why would the moving download arrow appear on the notification bar if it was not a live happening? Thanks.

The progress bar moved to completion, all without a connection!Because of the way Android works Google Maps may have been updating when you were connected to Wifi, then was suspended (usually because the screen went off). Now you've gone back into it the app can finish off what it was doing before it was suspended. This is why you may notice on occasion you go into Play Store, tell it to update a dozen apps, and then when you wake the screen half an hour later it's only done two of three of them. That's the battery management and more recent versions of Android make a bigger deal of suspending apps that were running when the phone goes to sleep, so the only thing that's really running as such is the call management and key features. Everything else is likely to get suspended until you go back into them.
