Spending in France

Fingers crossed we’re off to France in August, I usually always take cash for holiday spending as I’m worried about using debit/credit cards abroad. But, I’m wondering if Brittany will be mostly card only sales like it is here at the moment? Will small shops and bars still take cash? And if its card only what’s the safest way to spend by card abroad? Thanks for any thoughts.
