Student Grant

Options
Hi all, I would really appreciate some advice on this. I have applied for a Student grant to cover my living costs and studying materials. I am going to study in Denmark and the grant is through a charity. The total grant is 5K. Can anyone tell me if I have declare this as income? The grant won’t be available to me until two weeks before my studying starts when I am already going to be living in Denmark. Thank you

Certainly not until your receive it. Grants can easily be withdrawn.

But if I receive do I have to Declare it as income? It will got towards buying materials and paying rent and I will already be living in Denmark. I was thinking, for instance that I could ask them to deposit the rent directly into the landlord account, if I had to pay tax. Thank you

Almost certainly not but it would be a question for Danish tax law rather than uk.

Well in the UK you are allowed to earn £12,500 before you pay any tax, so I'd say you won't have to pay tax even though you will have to declare your income. £5k isn't much to live on though! I'm assuming that the grant is from a UK charity and that you will be returning to the UK after study. If that's the case, you won't have to pay any Danish tax.
