Exactly, 2mm is pretty close to 1.6mm, especially since it'll wear faster at lower depths.
The breaker is there quite specifically to allow you time to safely get the tyre changed.
Better grip in the dry weather though

Clue: "Slicks" used in racing are not the same as ancient, shagged, rock-hard-aged bald road tyres.

When racing requires road tyres, teams don't shave the tread to 0mm to increase grip, they shave it to decrease tread-block-squirm, where the rubber deforms, overheats and starts to break up. You would have to be driving like a grade-A Audi driver to have that problem on the road.

Not necessarily, more prone to punctures (thinner) and illegal. It's 3 points per bald tyre now isn't it?

That's what they tell you in the adverts, but if you were charged with 4 bald tyres at the same time, you'd actually only get 1 lot of 3 points, but a much bigger fine than for 1 tyre.

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Many tyre brands have 2 sets of tread indicators (never heard them called breakers), one at 1.6mm the other at 3mm.
