Ants

Is it my imagination or are there a lot more ants crawling around this year?

We've had 3 swarming flying ant days in the last month or so in central London - I've also noticed a lot more black ants out in my back patio generally.

Normally I'm a "leave it be"' type, but given the numbers I'm seriously considering ant killer at the moment.

Hmmm yes, they've usually gone by now but I seem to be getting a few colonies back.
I've been using cheap ant traps and refilling them with poison gel. This means the birds or wandering pets can't get at it. I'd bought a house that had stood empty and ants had eaten their way in and were running up the wall on viewing.
Took up slabs and used ant powder, poured Jeyes fluid down the cracks repeatedly, spray bleached stone and slabs so they couldn't leave trails.Puffed ant powder at base of walls and down cracks. It's worked wonders and they were reduced by more than half this following year.
Also building a garden and feeding the birds the blackbirds feasted on nests of flying ants in soil.
Now I just need the ant traps in spring, early summer. Maybe one more time right now so they don't make new nests this year.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

The swarm of flying ants was picked up off the southern coast earlier today and mistaken for approaching rain
    Maybe more coming?
