Redundancy - confidentiality expected incorrectly?

This morning at 9am my husband was informed his job is at risk of redundancy. 10am was his first consultation. He specified that as a line manager who is still working with his team he would like it to be kept confidential for the time being. They agreed.
Half an hour ago he started receiving messages of consolation from his team, so they have clearly been informed. Is this right? He isn't even 24 hours into a 30 day consultation period and it looks like people have been told he is leaving??
We are gutted. We're we crazy to expect an element of confidentiality for a while?

Although unprofessional they don’t have to keep it confidential.0
