Having recently received a renewal, I phoned to ask why it had gone up by £42 from last year. The customer service guy went through my details to see if it could be reduced, now this is where it gets weird. I told him there were 2 changes, I had retired and therefor my annual mileage would be reduced. He promptly upped my quote another £8! I explained Being now retired I would not be travelling in peak hours and be on the road a lot less anyway. So the total increase was now £50, penalised for being on the road less? They don’t deserve my custom, I cancelled my renewal!

Try LV - excellent website quote system and, in my case, substantially cheaper than my usual brokers. Also offer multi-car discount although have to ring for this.0

Possibly, their loss I went on a search site and immediately saved £80 with the same details and no age penalty. andScrapit said:

I had a call from my insurer, he was very quick, £287 taking my additional driver off would add £20 and business insurance was free.It was very strange, that it was £60 when they phoned me, compared to online.

Don't forget, being retired you only need cover for social, domestic and pleasure without commuting.1

Such are the vagaries of quotes from different car insurance companies;...it’s not an exact science across the board,...more a ‘black art’, imho.
