I remember when it was 5/10 for 4 star and 6/- for 5 star, per gallon, so about 6p a litre, a few years before decimalisation. Mind you, I think my father's ancient Jaguar probably only did about 12 miles to the gallon, so it was still quite expensive!

Petrol was no where near 139.9p a litre in 1950.  Not even that much per gallon.  🙂
Think it was about 3 shillings per gallon 30 odd pence?? and went up in mid 50s to 5 shillings because of Suez crisis.

Op most garages have pay at pump, unless you live somewhere quaint?
Pay at pump.  How shockingly modern!

I did like our local garage when you say in the car and the attendant just filled you up without you needing to do a thing.

That’s still the way at the garages where I live 🙂. A man comes out as soon as you pull up to the pumps and you just hand him the money out the window. I love it.

Thanks all for your comments -and for not making out I'm paranoid!

I shall see which local ones lets you pay at the window.  Sadly, although out in the sticks we don't have any where a person will come and serve you - that went many years ago.
