Another shout-out for StartRescue;...my son just got his renewal___£36.57 for their 3-Star cover which includes nationwide (and Wales!) recovery. That premium covers the car for any driver.
They do offer discount to existing customers;...had my son been a new customer the price would have been £42.27

Horses for courses__startrescues ‘car’ cover is very keenly priced__their ‘personal’ cover is not so attractive.

mine is £29, probably depends on car age, this is a renewal offer , was £1 cheaper last year Cover Details Total Retail Price ****** KIA SPORTAGE CRDI 2 ISG 2016 3 Star Cover £29.91 £29.91 FINAL TOTAL: £29.910 -
I have it not so much because I'm concerned about the cost of breaking down but because it offers a nationwide recovery service with a 24/7 accessible contact number. If I breakdown away from home I don't want to find myself stood on the hard-shoulder, or in some country lane, struggling for mobile signal while trying to google for a local recovery service.
I've tried searching for a pay-as-you-go service, ideally a national contact centre number to keep in the phone and pay for recovery if I break-down but I haven't found one yet. I know the AA and RAC will offer cover if you've broken down but their standard prices with the extra charges are quite a bit more than the basic packages from other providers.0 -
My AutoAid (MSE recommended) personal cover expired at the start of lockdown so on the basis that I wouldn't likely be using the car much didn't renew. Renewal was / is £60 for everything except European cover - after reading comments here I might check out Start Rescue single vehicle cover which is cheaper or if I want personal cover AutoAid. Those two are my current shortlist anyway .....0

I cancelled a green flag policy after a few months for a part refund and have now binned the documents, but Im sure they mentioned a 14 day cooling off period when I set it up. That would cover the OP

If you break down on a UK motorway there's a statutory charge of £150 for a callout if you don't have breakdown cover. And that £150 will be charged whether they're there 5 minutes changing your tyre or they tow you and that £150 only gets you towed off the motorway to the nearest safe place, not even a garage, so either the nearest layby at the next junction or the services which ever is the closest.1

Got Rescuemycar.com pretty comprehensive cover for £35.49, with £7.81 quickly paid out via topcashback. Net cost £27.68
To be honest, if someone is on such a tight motoring budget to not even be able to afford that, it worries me about that person really being on the road and what other corners they may have had to cut.
Even a tyre change on the motorway is deadly enough, if you call out a professional at least you can act as lookout for them, I see too many trucks drift into the hard shoulder. Its not worth dying over £27

Good post that;...to be fair you don’t see as many trucks drifting onto the ‘hard shoulder’ as you once did.
Just for our younger readers: “hard shoulder”... a hardened strip (usually painted red) alongside a motorway for stopping on in an emergency.
...they were very popular in the olden days,...but rarely seen today.
